Ashcroft’s comments came in response to questions about whether a viable third party could ever succeed in Belize’s political landscape. His answer? Not likely. Why? Because too many voters have normalized the culture of political handouts, vote-buying, and transactional loyalty that undermines any real chance at reform.
Belizeans routinely criticize elected leaders for corruption, yet every election cycle sees the same pattern—voters exchanging ballots for cash, cement, food hampers, and false promises. Then, once those same politicians take office, the outrage returns.
It’s a vicious cycle. And as Ashcroft points out, it won’t break until the voters themselves stop playing the game.
His statement isn’t just a swipe at politicians—it’s a mirror held up to the public. If the people truly want change, they must stop selling their votes and start demanding real leadership. No reform, no new party, no visionary candidate can succeed in a democracy where accountability starts and ends with what’s in a grocery bag or an envelope.
The uncomfortable truth is this: Belizean democracy isn’t just being undermined from the top—it’s being sold off from the bottom.
