By Aaron Humes: Ahead of the planned National Party Council (NPC) meeting set for Saturday, July 12, the internal struggles of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) have come into sharper focus as disagreements over leadership processes and party conventions threaten to deepen divisions within the party.
In a candid statement, Opposition Leader Tracy Taegar Panton expressed concerns that recent efforts to unify the UDP might be misleading, suggesting they are a front for an attempt to hijack the party once again. “Any genuine attempt to unite the UDP should include all bona fide divisional caretakers and their executive members,” she stated. “Unilateral decisions by only some factions undermine democracy and dilute the voices of party members.”
Taegar Panton emphasized the importance of accountability and inclusivity within the party, advocating for constituency conventions across Belize where the party does not already hold seats. She lamented that current proceedings appear to favour certain factions and called for transparent processes that align with democratic principles.
The opposition leader linked her concerns to the broader state of Belizean democracy, criticizing the current government’s overreach and policy decisions, such as possible increases in the General Sales Tax (GST) amid rising living costs. She warned that economic challenges, combined with external threats like a looming global recession and regional instability, could further impair Belize’s tourism industry and overall economic stability and that the Opposition must be in place to speak up: “Before we can hold the Government to account, the UDP must hold itself to account and do all it can to safeguard the foundational principles and founding values on which our Institution was built. We are all tired of the discord within but we can only move forward with integrity, credibility, inclusion and a sense of fair play for all concerned,” she stated.
Meanwhile, recent posts by former Party Leader John Saldivar highlighted procedural irregularities regarding upcoming party conventions. Saldivar criticized the rushed scheduling of standard bearer elections, accusing party leaders of attempting to impose candidates prematurely and bypassing established party rules.
Saldivar underscored that the conduct of constituency conventions should be under the authority of constituency chairpersons, as prescribed by party rules. He pointedly said of chairman Michael Peyrefitte: “If [he] ignores these basic Party Rules and continues to try to usurp the authority of Constituency Committees then he would have demonstrated that he has come back no different from the Chairman he was when he refused to follow the Party Constitution and allow the petitions that were submitted to him,” referring to those asking for a recall convention and ultimately a National Convention in 2024.
