By Aaron Humes: In a provocative move, Guatemalan Navy personnel reportedly planted their national flag on Sarstoon Island, an area that is recognized as Belizean territory, on September 10.
According to the Belize Defense Force (BDF) via Channel 7 News, they were made aware of the situation which involved Guatemalan naval officers asserting their presence on the island and informing BDF soldiers that they were operating under orders from their superiors. Eyewitness reports and video footage have emerged, showing the Guatemalan officers disembarking onto the island without any visible concern for potential repercussions.
This flag-planting incident occurs just days ahead of the Belize Territorial Volunteers’ annual visit to Sarstoon Island, a highly publicized event scheduled for September 13, and following two incursions of naval forces from Guatemala into Belizean territory.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is said to be preparing to respond to this latest incursion.
