Tenant joins landlord on remand after police find gun and ammunition inside rented apartment

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City tenant has joined his landlord on remand after police allegedly found a firearm and 15 live rounds of ammunition inside an apartment he was renting on Electric Avenue.

Andre Devon Garnett, 33, a construction worker and maintenance employee of Electric Avenue, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Neeshad Mohammed in Court #7, where he pleaded not guilty to kept firearm without a gun license and kept ammunition without a gun license.

Garnett is charged in connection with the same firearm and ammunition for which his landlord, Thomas Ferguson, 34, a construction worker of Electric Avenue, was arraigned and remanded last week.

In court, Garnett told the Magistrate that he works from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and had no knowledge of what was happening at the residence. He said he regretted renting the apartment and wished someone had warned him about the place before he moved in.

Magistrate Mohammed explained that because the charges fall under Section 16 of the Crime Control and Criminal Justice Act, the lower court could not grant him bail. Garnett was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until June 10, 2026.

Ferguson, who was arraigned on Friday, May 15, 2026, had also denied knowing about the firearm and ammunition. He reportedly told the court that he owns the apartment but was only renovating the property, which he had rented to Garnett.

According to police, on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, members of the Gang Intelligence, Investigation and Interdiction Unit were on patrol in the Saint Martin’s area, which falls under the State of Emergency zone, when they received information of a firearm at a residence on Electric Avenue.

Police say they went to the property, where they met Ferguson and informed him that a search would be conducted for illegal drugs, firearms and ammunition.

During the search, police reportedly lifted a large rug in the living room and found a black firearm concealed underneath. The firearm’s serial number was allegedly obliterated. Police say the magazine contained 15 live rounds of 9mm ammunition.

Ferguson was detained first, and police later issued an all-points bulletin for the tenant. Garnett has since been arrested and charged.

Both men are now expected to return to court on June 10, 2026.
