By Breaking Belize News Staff: An 18-year-old Belize City resident, Kelly Serrano, has been fined after pleading guilty to handling a stolen ZT2 Blue touchscreen cellphone valued at $335. The phone, along with its case, was reportedly stolen by Serrano’s common-law husband, 33-year-old Jerome Middleton, who had been arraigned earlier in the day on theft charges.
Serrano, who resides at #108 East Canal, appeared unrepresented before the Magistrate’s Court, where she wasted no time in accepting responsibility for her actions. According to court details, Serrano was found with the stolen cellphone in her white purse during a police search of Middleton’s home on December 19, 2024.
The events unfolded after the owner of the phone, reported it missing from a house on East Collet Canal. The owner claimed he saw a man, known to him as “Mannan,” enter the house while he was at the Michael Finnegan Market. Shortly after, he saw the man leaving on a bicycle and later discovered his phone missing.
Police conducted a search of Middleton’s residence on Fairweather Street, where the stolen phone was recovered in Serrano’s possession. Both Middleton and Serrano were detained and charged in connection with the incident.
Serrano was sentenced to pay a fine of $300 plus a $5 court fee, with a deadline of January 31, 2025, to settle the payment. Failure to do so will result in two months of imprisonment. The phone’s case, valued at $35, was not recovered.
