Teenage motorcyclist dies after collision with bus

By Aaron Humes: Police are investigating a fatal road traffic accident in western Belize that led to an 18-year-old boy’s death.

On Thursday, October 16, about 5:20 p.m., police responded to a road traffic accident at the corner of Saint Jude Street and Saint Matthews Street, Belmopan City. Upon arrival, they observed a bus parked on the street with damages to its front, and a motorcycle in a drain on the right side of the street, also with damages. 

Initial investigation revealed that about 5:00 p.m., 23-year-old Jonathan Estrada, a Belizean bus driver of San Ignacio Town, was driving the bus traveling from a north to west direction on Saint Matthews Street. Upon reaching the intersection of Saint Matthews Street and Saint Jude Street, the motorcycle, which was driven by 18-year-old Jonni Cano, a Belizean student of the Stann Creek District, accompanied by 18-year-old Jamin Patt, also a Belizean student of the Stann Creek District, was traveling from an east to south direction on Saint Jude Street collided into the front of the bus, causing both the driver and passenger to be flung from the cycle. 

Both occupants of the motorcycle were transported by ambulance to the Western Regional Hospital. Estrada did not sustain any injuries, Cano was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police investigation continues.
