By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 19-year-old Baracat Street resident is out on bail after being formally charged with aggravated assault on a police officer but he says he plans to sue the Belize Police Department for what he claims was police brutality.

Andrew Guild appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Ludlow Black in Court #3 on Tuesday morning after spending two nights in detention. Guild is accused of assaulting a police officer during an encounter on Sunday, July 27, 2025.

According to police, Guild was behind the wheel of a black Dodge Ram pickup truck with no license plates when he was intercepted by the Precinct 2 Quick Response Team during a joint operation. Officers say he was wanted for questioning in connection with a shooting. When approached, Guild allegedly became verbally aggressive and refused to exit the vehicle. Police claim that during the struggle, Guild shoved the officer in the chest, causing pain.

Guild was charged on Monday and pleaded not guilty during his arraignment. He was granted bail in the sum of $2,000 with two sureties of $1,000 each. Conditions include no contact with the complainant or witnesses, and mandatory weekly check-ins at the Raccoon Street Police Station every Friday starting August 1.

Speaking to the media outside the court, Guild alleged that he was the victim of police abuse and vowed to take legal action against the Belize Police Department.

Guild is due back in court on October 7, 2025.
