By Rubén Morales Iglesias: With all the four visiting teams in Belize City, the XX U-21 Women’s Central American Volleyball Championship is ready to start on Tuesday July 16 at the Belize City Civic Center.
On Monday, the team representatives met individually with the tournament’s technical committee in the obligatory technical meeting that precedes all official volleyball tournaments.
Head Coach Cuban Jose Fontes and Team Manager Vivet Palacio presented the Team Belize uniforms.
Guatemala are the defending champions and Belize, the subchampions. In the 19th tournament held here two years ago Belize finished in second place to Guatemala. Belize’s neighbours won a hard-fought final in five (25-19, 20-25, 20-25, 25-19, 15-11) at the Civic.
Organized by the Association of Central American Volleyball Federations (AFECAVOL), the tournament will only last four days as nine-time champions Costa Rica and two-time champions Panama opted out. Six-time Guatemala are the clear favourites, but Belize intend to win their first tournament. The other participants are one-time champions Honduras along with El Salvador and Nicaragua.
Belize’s Schedule
Belize play Nicaragua in their first game on Tuesday, July 16 at 7:30 pm.
On Wednesday, July 7, Team Belize face Honduras at 7:30 pm.
Team Belize will rest on Thursday but will return on Friday against El Salvador at 8:00 pm.
In what is expected to be a decisive match, Belize will close against Guatemala on Saturday at 8:00 pm.
The winning team qualifies to the NORCECA Continental Championship.

The Belize Volleyball Association said tickets are available in advance via KwiqPass in the following manner:
General seating: $10 for adults, $5 for kids aged 12 and under.
– Reserved seating (Premium, VIP, Courtside): $15 to $30 depending on seat selection.
– Tickets available through the KwiqPass App (processing fee: $0.99).
