By Horace Palacio: Teachers in the Stann Creek District staged a silent protest on Saturday during Belize’s official Independence Day celebration at BTL Park in Dangriga Town, drawing attention to their ongoing struggles with stagnant wages in the face of rising inflation.
Supported by second-year primary education students, the educators quietly demonstrated during the ceremony, holding placards that expressed their frustrations over the lack of salary adjustments. Messages such as “Salaries minus increments plus inflation equal SUFFERING” and “Bread gone up, egg gone up, cheese gone up… teachers’ salaries gone down” highlighted their discontent with the current economic situation.
The protest came amid government claims of rapid economic growth and “historical prosperity,” which have not translated into financial relief for teachers, who have been working on 2020 salaries while inflation has steadily increased. The teachers are still waiting for their promised 2021 and 2022 salary increments.
The peaceful demonstration, held during one of the country’s most significant national events, underscored the teachers’ frustrations as they continue to bear the brunt of economic hardship.
The protest remained orderly, with no disruption to the Independence Day celebrations, but it raised critical questions about the government’s commitment to addressing the concerns of the education sector.
