By Breaking Belize News Staff: A well-known taxi operator, Joseph Gabourel Vaccaro, 30, was remanded to the Belize Central Prison following his arraignment for the shooting murder of Gaston Barrow, an alleged gang member of PIV, which occurred on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at Mile 4 ½ on the George Price Highway.
Barrow was killed after leaving the Old Belize Compound parking lot with three others in a vehicle, including driver Hank Carr and two female passengers, when shots were fired at them. Barrow was pronounced dead on arrival at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), while Carr sustained injuries but was later released. Police reported that Carr refused to cooperate with investigators.
Vaccaro, a taxi driver residing on Cumberbatch Street and no stranger to the police or the courts, appeared unrepresented before Chief Magistrate Deborah Rogers at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday. He was formally read a single charge of murder but did not enter a plea. Bail was denied due to the nature of the offense, and he was remanded until January 6, 2026.
Before leaving the court, Vaccaro claimed his constitutional rights were violated during detention. He alleged that after being held at Racoon Street Police Station from Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. for 48 hours, he was transferred to another station on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 10:20 a.m., just minutes before his release, and was not formally charged until 6:30 p.m. the same day. Vaccaro stated he has acknowledgment forms to support his claim, currently with relatives.
Police investigations revealed that the shooter, later identified as Vaccaro, fired at the vehicle from a taxi parked in the Old Belize Compound lot, injuring Carr, before escaping. Surveillance footage reviewed by authorities led to Vaccaro’s detention and subsequent charge.
