Taxi driver arrested for drunk driving at northern Belize checkpoint

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A routine highway checkpoint in northern Belize resulted in one arrest for drunk driving early Sunday morning. Police report that on November 23rd, 2025, at about 4:00 a.m., officers formally arrested and charged Lorenzo Nas, 24, a taxi driver from Xaibe Village, Corozal District, for driving a motor vehicle with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit. Nas was cautioned and chose to remain silent following the charge.

The arrest occurred during a four-hour vehicular checkpoint along the Philip Goldson Highway, where police screened dozens of drivers for signs of intoxication and potential criminal activity. During the operation, police issued four traffic tickets for various violations, including defective vehicle lights, expired licenses, and failure to wear seat belts.

Police say the checkpoint focused primarily on drunk driving prevention, but also targeted illegal firearms, ammunition, drugs, uncustomed goods, and undocumented individuals. Officials noted that aside from the single arrest and several citations, the operation remained peaceful.
