By Zoila Palma: Belizean shoppers will enjoy 2 tax-free weekends this month as the Belize Tax Service (BTS) confirms that GST will be waived on December 6–7 and December 20–21, 2025.
During these periods, GST will be removed from local retail sales of standard-rated goods, allowing consumers to avoid the usual 12.5% tax applied to most purchases.
The department is advising the public to check receipts carefully to ensure GST is not mistakenly charged during the tax-free days.
Any suspected abuse or non-compliance can be reported by calling 613-2773, 613-8375, 614-5731, or 613-2840.
While the tax-free initiative applies broadly to goods, certain restrictions remain.
The waiver covers local, immediate, and final retail sales of goods that are available for immediate delivery.
The tax break does not apply to services, including mobile top-ups and phone plans.
Additionally, picnic shoulder ham, smoked ham leg, and imported turkey will be temporarily zero-rated for the entire month of December, offering further savings during the holiday season.
GST registrants are reminded that filing obligations remain unchanged.
When submitting their December 2025 GST return, businesses must record zero-rated sales from the tax-free weekends under line 110 of the GST Return Form.
They must also record sales of the temporarily zero-rated holiday meats under the same line and ensure all related sales data and invoices are included.
