Tashane Williams remanded on charge of promoting gang activity

Posted: Friday, August 8, 2025. 2:49 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Twenty-four-year-old Tashane Williams, a resident of Tibruce Street on Belize City’s Southside, is behind bars once again, this time on a charge of promoting gang-related activity.

Williams appeared unrepresented before a Magistrate in Court #5 of the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where he was read a single charge under the Crime Control and Criminal Justice Act. The charge stems from allegations that Williams appeared in photos flashing the PIV gang hand sign, an acronym for “Peace in the Village.”

Before entering a plea, Williams asked the court what penalties he would face if he pleaded guilty. The court briefly stood down the matter to provide clarification. Upon resuming, the sitting Magistrate informed him that the offense carries a fine of up to $20,000, a prison term, or both. Although the court noted that first-time offenders may receive a reduced sentence, Williams promptly entered a not guilty plea upon hearing he could be jailed.

Despite the plea, Williams was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until September 15, 2025, as the Magistrate has no discretion to grant bail for gang-related offenses under Section 16F of the Act. He was advised that he may apply for bail through the High Court with the help of an attorney.

This is not Williams’ first brush with the law. In May 2025, he was granted bail in the Magistrate’s Court on charges of kept firearm and ammunition without a gun license, after spending 19 months on remand. At that time, he was also out on Supreme Court bail for a charge of rape of a child.
