By Zoila Palma: The Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE) officially launched the Talent Up Belize Operational Workshop today marking a major step toward building a demand-driven digital skills ecosystem. The initiative is being positioned as a foundational effort to strengthen the country’s workforce and prepare it for higher-value digital and business services.
Speaking at the opening, Inter-American Development Bank (Inter-American Development Bank) representative in Belize Karla González highlighted the workshop as a pivotal moment for the country’s digital transformation. She noted that under the Talent Up framework, Belize aims to elevate its business process outsourcing (BPO) sector toward more advanced services, reshaping opportunities within the broader economy.
Chief Executive Officer in the Office of the Prime Minister, Investment and Civil Aviation Narda Garcia emphasized that national progress depends heavily on human capital development. She stressed the importance of structured training pathways and globally recognized skills certification, adding that the initiative is expected to benefit key sectors such as tourism and business services, with BELTRAIDE leading implementation efforts for workforce development.
Prime Minister John Briceño highlighted the importance of digital transformation in maintaining national competitiveness. He pointed to upcoming tools such as the Digital Identification system (DIBED) and broader modernization efforts as part of a shift in how Belize conducts and accesses services and business opportunities.
BELTRAIDE also highlighted Belize’s youthful population, noting that more than 60% of citizens are under the age of 35.
Through partnerships with the IDB and Google Cloud, the Talent Up initiative aims to expand access to flexible tech training and certifications, reduce inequality, and support entrepreneurship as part of the country’s National Digital Agenda over the next five years.
