This day commemorates the 1947 “228 Incident,” a tragic event when government forces clashed with civilians, leading to widespread violence and a long period of martial law.
For decades, discussion of the incident was suppressed, but Taiwan’s transition to democracy in the late 20th century led to efforts to address this dark chapter in history.
In 1995, Taiwan officially declared February 28th as 228 Peace Memorial Day to honor the victims and promote reconciliation.
The day is marked by ceremonies at memorial parks, cultural programs, and community events. The white lily, symbolizing remembrance and resilience, is commonly used during these observances.
While the day primarily affects Taiwan, it also resonates globally, with support from human rights groups and international organizations.
The day emphasizes truth and reconciliation, aiming to heal the scars of the past and promote justice, democracy, and human rights for future generations.
