By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize and the Republic of China (Taiwan) have signed two major agreements, reaffirming a partnership that has stood for decades.

The signings came on Tuesday as Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung neared the end of his three day visit to Belize.

Lin’s day began with a courtesy call on Governor General Dame Froyla Tzalam. He was later welcomed by Prime Minister John Briceño, who was joined by senior Cabinet officials.

In the afternoon, Lin visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade for bilateral talks with Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca. The two discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

Following those talks, the ministers witnessed the signing of a letter of intent between the University of Belize and the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund, Taiwan’s main foreign aid agency. The agreement paves the way for the establishment of the Taiwan Caribbean Academy.

A second agreement focused on Belize’s diplomats. Lin and his Belizean counterparts signed a bilateral agreement on diplomatic staff training cooperation. It is aimed at strengthening the capacity and professional development of Belize’s foreign service.

Lin did not travel alone. His delegation includes more than 30 representatives from sectors including green energy and smart transportation, artificial intelligence, space technology, biotechnology, health care, tourism, and finance and trade. The goal is to deepen economic cooperation between Taiwan and its Central American allies.

Lin and his delegation are scheduled to leave Belize today for Guatemala. There, he will meet President Bernardo Arévalo and attend a reception marking 92 years of diplomatic relations between Taiwan and Guatemala, as well as Taiwan’s National Day.
