Swing Bridge replacement project moves forward with grant from Government of Japan

By Zoila Palma: The long-anticipated replacement of Belize City’s Swing Bridge is advancing under a multi-phase project supported by a BZ$28 million grant from the Government of Japan, Minister of Infrastructure Julius Espat explained.

An alternate crossing is expected to begin construction in April 2026 and be completed by September 2026, ensuring continued connectivity during the main replacement works.

The existing bridge’s metal superstructure will be removed by December 2026 to prepare for the installation of a new composite steel and reinforced concrete bridge.

Minister Espat noted that strict timelines are in place under the grant agreement to ensure timely execution of the project.
