By Zoila Palma: The Sustainable and Inclusive Belize (SAIB) project has officially launched a targeted National Outreach Tour aimed at supporting small individual farmers across the country.
Beginning next week, SAIB representatives will travel throughout the Stann Creek, Toledo, Corozal, Cayo, and Belize districts to engage directly with farmers and provide critical information on accessing financial assistance.
The outreach initiative focuses on underserved groups within the agricultural sector to ensure equitable access to funding opportunities. Special emphasis is being placed on small individual farmers, female farmers and female migrant farmers, Indigenous farmers, and youth farmers.
Unlike traditional financing, the SAIB program offers non-refundable matching grants of up to $4,000 BZD for eligible small farmers.
The funds do not need to be repaid once they are used for approved agricultural improvements.
Grants can support climate-smart agriculture initiatives such as solar irrigation systems, greenhouses, and water harvesting projects.
Farmers may also invest in equipment, post-harvest storage, soil conservation techniques, biodegradable packaging, and expanding access to new markets.
District Extension Officers will be available throughout the application process to assist farmers with paperwork and submissions.
Communications Manager Signe Caminada said the project is committed to reaching farmers in even the most remote communities. “We are moving beyond the main towns and into the heart of our rural communities. Our goal is to ensure that a female migrant farmer in Cowpen or a youth farmer in San Antonio has the same access to this $4,000 opportunity as anyone else,” she stated.
