By Aaron Humes: Police have announced the recapture of 29-year-old Israel Bradley N. Usher, nicknamed “Satan,” a suspect implicated in the robbery of two female tourists in San Ignacio last Friday night.
Usher was apprehended in the Bainsville area of Hattieville, Belize District, on Tuesday evening after he briefly evaded police custody earlier this week. The incident that led to his initial arrest took place late Friday evening, when California residents Hailee Hackett and Esmeralda Estabrook were targeted while walking along Burns Avenue. Surveillance footage captured the robbery, revealing a male suspect armed with a knife who demanded the tourists’ belongings.
According to Staff Officer Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith, speaking to LOVE FM this afternoon, the capture came as a result of “operational efforts by the Quick Response Team, GI-3 personnel as well as Special Branch personnel, acting on intelligence. So, we are grateful that the Special Branch personnel were able to collect that information from members of the general public, which is an indication that persons were as outraged about this incident as we are as a Department. And certainly, he will be charged for the offense that he committed as well as the escape, and be taken before the court.”
During the confrontation, the suspect managed to steal a purse containing a cell phone, $200 in cash, and various personal items. Fortunately, the stolen phone and other property were later recovered by police as ASP Smith explained at Monday’s press briefing: “Police responded, and they were able with the assistance of the scenes of crime technician to trace the phone in an area where it was recovered. The information in relation to the identity of the suspect was disseminated, and officers attached to the quick response team in Santa Elena, whilst on their patrol, they observed a male person who matched the description. This male person was searched, and on his person, they recovered 2 items of property belonging to the female, and he was subsequently detained.”
However, while police attended to cleaning duties in the cell block of the San Ignacio Police Station, Usher took advantage of the situation and escaped. Commissioner of Police Dr Richard Rosado has ordered an internal investigation into the circumstances of that escape.
