By Aaron Humes: A violent incident during a football game at Marion Jones Stadium on January 31 has shocked the community, resulting in one death and three injuries. The alleged shooter, 29-year-old Shevaughn Anthony Gotoy, has been charged with multiple offenses, including two counts of attempted murder.
Today, Wednesday, Gotoy was arraigned at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. He faces a total of eight charges: two counts of attempted murder, two counts of dangerous harm, three counts of the use of deadly means of harm, and one count of wounding. Due to the seriousness of the charges, the magistrate denied bail, remanding him to the Belize Central Prison until April 8.
In a statement to the press, Gotoy’s family expressed their support, asserting that he has no gang affiliations and was simply a bystander at the game who acted to protect himself and others when threatened. They described him as a hardworking individual known for his kindness and positive demeanor, adding that they deeply regret the tragic loss of life and extend their condolences to deceased Brandon Augustus Baptist’s family.
The chaos erupted at approximately 9:15 p.m. when gunfire rang out during the game. Eyewitnesses reported that an argument between several individuals on the bleachers escalated, leading to the shooting. Baptist, 39, was critically injured and pronounced dead on arrival at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital shortly after 9:30 p.m. Three other men—John Grinage, 37; Gerson Mena, 31; and Kameron Williams, 21—were injured and received treatment for gunshot wounds.
Following the incident, Gotoy turned himself in to authorities at the Queen Street Police Station on February 2, accompanied by his attorney, Ronell Gonzalez. During his police interview, Gotoy claimed that he acted in self-defense, alleging that Baptist, a known gang leader, had pulled a weapon on him.
No specific charges have yet been laid on anyone, including Gotoy, for the death of Baptist.
