By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Women’s Month is observed annually in March. Throughout women’s month, Breaking Belize News is highlighting Belizean Superwomen making a positive impact in their community.

This year’s theme is ‘Inspire Inclusion: Count Her In’.

Today’s feature is on Activist and Community advocate Cynthia Ellis.

Ellis was born on January 16th, 1953 in August Pine Ridge, Orange Walk.

She is a mother of 5 children, a grandmother to 17 grandchildren, and a mentor to countless other young people.

Ellis has been a pioneer in Belize and beyond, from mentoring youth and community leaders to improve the quality of their lives in areas of sustainability and environmental justice issues.

Her passion has been to help people help themselves.

As the Champion of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Belize, Ellis has trained and mentored several leaders countrywide to aid them in promoting innovative projects such as preserving the El Pilar Forest Gardening.

As an advocate, Ellis has mobilized women and worked on addressing violence issues in Belize.

She serves as the Ambassador at Large for Garifuna Nation, a network of Garifuna around the world working to build sovereignty and land rights for the Garifuna. She is also currently compiling her life story and lessons into a memoir on her experience as an activist.

Recently, Ellis has spent time traveling around the U.S. working with other members of Garifuna Nation, colleagues from the University of Santa Barbara, the Ohio State University, and other universities, and participating in the U.N. Permanent Forum for Indigenous Issues and the Alabama Black Midwives Conference.

Ellis continues to contribute to our community by mentoring students at St. Ignatius High School in Santa Elena.

Principal of St. Ignatius High School Jeaneane Neal expressed gratitude to Ellis as she continues to mentor and counsel students.

“A lot of our students, boys and girls prefer to speak to her in terms of counselling sessions, pastoral counselling and the students trust her a lot,” Neal said.

Ellis’ motto is building Belize one family at a time.

As a woman of the 21st century, she considers herself for the world.

Ellis rests in the spirit of her spiritual name Lubafu Isieni to promote people of destiny and purpose.

Her mission, vision, and aim are to coach, encourage and mentor anyone who wants to challenge themselves to be the best they can be.
