By Horace Palacio: Belize can expect generally fair weather today, with sunny skies and a few cloudy spells. Showers will remain isolated throughout the day, with a slightly higher chance of rain over inland areas this afternoon and evening. Tonight, a few showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to affect mainly southern and coastal areas, with shower activity gradually decreasing overnight.
Winds will be light from the west-southwest at 5 to 10 knots, resulting in slight sea conditions with waves ranging between 1 to 3 feet. Temperatures are expected to reach 91°F (33°C) along the coast, 95°F (35°C) inland, and 80°F (27°C) in the hills during the day. Nighttime lows will range from 80°F (27°C) along the coast to 74°F (23°C) inland, and 68°F (20°C) in the hills.
In the tropics, Hurricane Isaac is being monitored. As of 3:00 AM, the hurricane was located approximately 1,175 miles west of the Azores, moving eastward at 12 mph with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. Meanwhile, an area of low pressure, designated AL98, located midway between the Cabo Verde Islands and the Lesser Antilles, has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression or storm over the next 48 hours as it moves westward.
Closer to Belize, another area of low pressure may form over the western Caribbean Sea by the middle of next week, though it currently has a low chance of development over the next 48 hours. The National Meteorological Service will continue to monitor this system.
Looking ahead to Saturday, fair weather is expected to persist, with isolated showers or thunderstorms, primarily over southern and coastal areas during the night.
The tides peaked at 5:55 AM and will peak again at 7:42 PM, with lows at 1:33 PM and 12:31 AM tomorrow. The sun rose at 5:42 AM and will set at 5:44 PM, while the moon is expected to set at 2:52 PM today and rise again at 2:21 AM tomorrow.
