By Aaron Humes, Tower Hill, Orange Walk District: The official kickoff of the 2024-2025 processing season for sugar takes place here at 10 this morning. The date was gazetted after agreement by the Sugar Industry Control Board (SICB) last week Friday.
It comes amid new difficulties for the industry that has long been Belize’s best earner, as froghopper pests and fusarium wilt have taken their toll.
Weather and climate change are also a factor, with first drought and then flooding impacting cane fields in Corozal and Orange Walk.
An official “cane toss” will take place at 10 a.m. sharp and Belize Sugar Industries Limited will have its booths on display.
