By Zoila Palma: Belize recorded a significant increase in domestic merchandise export earnings in September 2026, with revenues climbing by 31.7 percent to $47.9 million, compared to $36.4 million in September 2025, according to the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).
The increase of $11.5 million was largely driven by sugar exports, which generated $20.7 million in September 2026, compared to just $3.8 million during the same month last year.
The SIB explained that the substantial increase was mainly due to differences in the timing of shipments, noting that bulk sugar shipments were recorded in September this year, while there were no bulk exports of the product during September 2025.
Molasses earnings also increased, rising from less than $100,000 in September 2025 to $300,000 in September 2026, as exported quantities grew considerably.
Meanwhile, marine product earnings remained relatively stable at just over $4.1 million. Higher exports and improved prices for lobster tails helped offset reduced sales of whole lobsters and the absence of shrimp exports during the month.
The United States was the leading contributor to the increase in export earnings, with revenues from that market climbing by $16.2 million, from $2.7 million in September 2025 to $18.9 million in September 2026, largely due to higher sugar exports.
