By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Agriculture and Sugar Cane Production Committee, in association with Belize Sugar Industries Limited and the various cane farmers associations has announced that the crop will restart on Tuesday morning, March 4, at 10 a.m.
A delivery schedule will be announced on Sunday. Farmers are advised to continue exercising good harvesting practices, control and coordinate burning of cane, harvesting mature cane stalks only, and bundle rather than push-pile cane onto the trucks.
Incessant rainfall and waterlogged conditions made a mess of the cane fields in Corozal and Orange Walk, with the factory at Tower Hill posting unsightly figures for tons of sugar made from tons of cane crushed at 14 to 1.
Approximately 16,000 tons of sugar have been made from 243,000 tons of cane ground.
Agriculture Minister Jose Mai believes this season will be especially difficult. Weather conditions and the fusarium wilt attack in Corozal District are dragging down production, which could impact Belize’s export market.
