By Zoila Palma: Forty student leaders from Golden Stream, Indian Creek, Big Falls and San Pedro Columbia Primary Schools are taking part in a School Safety Leadership Programme aimed at helping children understand disaster risks and prepare for emergencies.
The initiative, highlighted by UNICEF Belize, is designed to promote safer and more resilient school communities.
Through the programme, students are learning practical and engaging ways to identify risks, prevent disasters and respond during emergencies. The lessons are intended to equip the students with knowledge and skills they can apply within their schools and communities.
The participating students are also serving as members of their respective schools’ Safety and Disaster Leadership Teams. In these roles, they are encouraged to share what they learn with their peers and help promote a culture of safety, demonstrating how children can actively contribute to disaster preparedness and prevention.
UNICEF Belize said the programme recognizes that when children understand the risks around them, they can become active participants in finding solutions.
