Students celebrate International Literacy Day with books, stories and character day

By Zoila Palma:  Schools across Belize are joining communities around the world today, September 8, in recognizing International Literacy Day, a day dedicated to highlighting the importance of reading, writing and literacy in building stronger, more informed and inclusive societies.

Since 1967, International Literacy Day has been observed annually on September 8 to remind policymakers, educators and the public that literacy is a fundamental human right and a foundation for lifelong learning.

In Belize, the occasion is often brought to life through fun and educational activities in primary and secondary schools.

Students may participate in character day, dressing up as their favorite book or story characters, while schools also organize storytelling sessions, reading competitions, poetry, book displays, spelling activities, dramatizations and other literacy-focused events designed to encourage children to develop a love for reading.

International Literacy Day 2026 carries additional significance as it marks the 60th anniversary of the observance.

UNESCO proclaimed International Literacy Day in 1966, and this year’s celebration is being held under the theme “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity.” The theme provides an opportunity to reflect on progress made over six decades while examining the continuing challenges facing literacy in an increasingly changing world.

Despite decades of progress, millions of children and adults worldwide continue to struggle with basic literacy.

As schools celebrate with books, costumes, storytelling and creative activities, International Literacy Day serves as a reminder that literacy extends far beyond the ability to read and write. It gives children and adults the tools to gain knowledge, exercise their rights, participate in their communities and build better futures.
