By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A powerful magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck southern Costa Rica on Tuesday night, sending tremors through the capital and surrounding areas.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported the quake occurred at 9:57 pm local time, about 62 kilometers south of San Jose. It originated at a depth of approximately 31 kilometers.
Residents described the shaking as strong but brief, with items falling from shelves and lights swaying across several communities. The tremor was widely felt throughout the central region, including in San Jose, Curridabat, and Paraiso.
Preliminary data suggests moderate shaking was experienced in Quepos, the town nearest to the epicenter, while light tremors were reported as far away as Puerto Limón, over 140 kilometers distant.
Authorities in Costa Rica have not reported any casualties or major damage so far but continue to evaluate structures and monitor for aftershocks.
The EMSC noted that details such as the exact magnitude and epicenter could be revised as new seismic data is analyzed in the coming hours.
Central America is located on the seismically active boundary of the Cocos and Caribbean plates, making it one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the hemisphere.
