By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 27-year-old Belize City man walked free from a theft charge after his stepfather asked the court to drop the case against him.

Alejandro Zuniga appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Court #1 and pleaded guilty to stealing money from his stepfather’s account using his ATM card. Prosecutors alleged that Zuniga withdrew nearly $900 over the weekend.

In court, Zuniga admitted to taking the card but claimed he only withdrew $600 and insisted he had intended to return the money. His stepfather later told the court he did not want to proceed with the case.

With no evidence offered by the prosecution, the charge was withdrawn, and Zuniga was allowed to go free.

Before leaving court, Zuniga was cautioned that he was lucky not to have been charged with card theft — a more serious offense that could have landed him in jail.
