By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday, the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) hosted a press conference presenting figures for August 2024.
Statistician II Melvin Perez explained that the cumulative inflation rate for the first 8 months of the year 2024 compared to the same period of the year 2023 stood at 3.8%. So now looking at the measure categories affecting the cumulative inflation rate of 3.8%.
Perez said that the food and non-alcoholic beverages category increased by 6.1%.
SIB noted that the food and non-alcoholic beverages category contributed the most to the overall increase.
“And this was mainly due to increases in vegetables, dairy products, meats, cereal products, fruits, sugar, fish and other food items,” Perez said.
In addition, figures from the SIB showed that the average price of selected food items went up by almost 20% specifically grapefruit, grapes, cabbage, okras, black beans, red kidney beans and sugar.
