By Zoila Palma: The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), hosted its 2025 Data User Conference (DUC) at the Best Western Plus Belize Biltmore Plaza. Held as part of Statistics Week celebrations, which coincide with Caribbean Statistics Day on October 15, the event underscored Belize’s commitment to promoting the use of data for governance, policy development, and climate resilience. The conference was made possible through funding from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) via UNDP Belize.
More than 50 representatives from government ministries, academia, research institutions, the media, and civil society participated in the day-long conference. Highlights included the launch of two key census thematic reports—one on migration and another on multidimensional poverty—alongside a presentation on family farming in Latin America and the Caribbean. Expert panels explored critical topics such as migration trends and policy responses, the role of the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) in targeting development priorities, and strategies to strengthen family farming for food security and rural livelihoods.
Participants also viewed top communication products created through the PARIS21 climate advocacy training and engaged in discussions on how data supports better decision-making in areas of science, policy, and development. The SIB expressed gratitude to KOICA, UNDP, PARIS21, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI), the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), and the University of Belize for their collaboration and support. The event reaffirmed the importance of reliable data and cross-sector partnerships in shaping Belize’s sustainable future.
