State of the Nation: Belize is “fighting fit”, says Prime Minister Briceño

By Aaron Humes: Amid a fractious, confrontational and chaotic world, Belize is standing tall, according to Prime Minister John Briceño. 

From “misgovernance and pandemic” five years ago, Belize can afford to have employers looking for workers, and not the other way around – and will be paying them a minimum of six dollars per hour moving forward. 

In the public sector, public officers and teachers can expect increased salaries and increments valued at $112.4 million or $750 per member of the public service. Our dollar is stronger and refreshed, no longer bearing the image of the former Head of State but of two National Heroes.

Which is not to say there aren’t problems. Natural pests such as fusarium wilt has laid waste to sugar cane fields in the North; but farmers can look forward to assistance and a new refinery in the center of the country. New World Screwworm has taken its toll on livestock and citrus is still recovering from its own maladies, but new industries such as coconuts are moving into their place.
