By Aaron Humes: Though “draconian,” Prime Minister John Briceño says Tuesday’s State of Emergency in the Belize City and Cayo District was necessary to arrest the epidemic of gang violence.
The measure will be temporary and tempered by efforts to mediate among gang members, but efforts are being put in to arrest the problem.
New laws will increase the penalty for possession of illegal weapons and a special court will be created to address gun and gang crimes, he announced.
This fight can be won because Belizeans are equipped to fight it, the P.M. said.
The Prime Minister is also recognizing special invitees Captain Howell Grange and Jair Castaneda for their bravery in the Holy Thursday hijacking (Fitzgerald Brown is recovering from further complications suffered after the incident), saying the nation was grateful for their intervention.
