By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The U.S. Department of State is warning foreign nationals that visitor visas cannot be used for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that a child can obtain U.S. citizenship.
In a statement, the State Department said it is moving aggressively to shut down illegal birth tourism schemes around the world under President Donald Trump.
According to U.S. officials, embassies have uncovered organized networks that allegedly helped foreign nationals use fraudulent documents, visa coaches, housing arrangements and delivery plans to enter the United States for childbirth.
The State Department says visas have already been revoked in several regions, including West Africa, Europe and North Africa, where hundreds of suspected birth tourism cases were identified.
The warning carries important Belizean context.
Many Belizeans travel regularly to the United States for shopping, medical care, family visits, vacations and business. Some Belizean families also have relatives living in the U.S. and may travel while pregnant for legitimate personal or medical reasons.
But U.S. officials are making it clear that if immigration authorities believe the main purpose of a visitor visa application is to give birth in the U.S. for citizenship benefits, that visa can be denied or revoked.
The issue is especially serious because visa fraud can result in long-term consequences, including cancellation of visas, permanent travel bans and future immigration complications.
For Belizeans, the message is simple: be honest during visa interviews, travel for the purpose stated on the application and avoid anyone promising shortcuts, coaching or fake documentation.
