By Breaking Belize News Staff: The State has appointed attorney Ardel Sabido to represent Jaylon Jadon Jones, who is currently on remand in connection with the 2024 murder of a Belize Coast Guard officer.
Jones appeared before High Court Justice Nigel Pilgrim, where he was formally introduced to his court-appointed attorney. Jones had previously been unrepresented in the matter. Justice Pilgrim ordered that Case Management Conference (CMC) forms be filed on or before February 11, 2026, and adjourned the case to February 13, 2026, when CMC proceedings are scheduled to begin.
Jones is charged with the murder of 25-year-old Coast Guard officer Charles Winston James, which occurred on April 10, 2024. He was first arraigned on the murder charge on Friday, April 12, 2024, and has remained on remand since.
According to police reports, officers responded to a report of shots fired on Consuelo Street, Belize City, at around 9:20 p.m. Upon arriving at a green cement structure shortly after 9:30 p.m., police found the motionless body of a man with apparent gunshot injuries. The deceased was later identified as Charles Winston James of Consuelo Street.
Initial investigations revealed that James was inside an apartment with four other individuals when they were approached by two men. Police say one of the men pulled out a firearm and fired shots in James’ direction, fatally wounding him. A shootout reportedly followed between the gunman and responding police officers, resulting in one of the suspects being shot.
That individual was identified as Jaylon Jones, who sustained a gunshot wound to his right foot.
