Press Release

The National Meteorological Service of Belize, in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) Belize, has successfully concluded a three-part national workshop series on Landscape Assessment for Needs for an Effective Climate-Resilient Early Warning System (CREWS). The sessions were held in Belize City on September 5, in Cayo on September 8, and concluded on September 9 in the City of Belmopan.

The workshops brought together representatives from government institutions, academia, utilities, farming communities, and disaster risk managers. Over 50 participants from 30 different stakeholders collectively examined how climate forecasts and early warning information can better guide decision-making in agriculture, water management, energy supply, and disaster preparedness.

Through interactive group work, plenary discussions, and sector-specific mapping exercises, participants identified critical decision points, such as planting schedules, irrigation planning, flood preparedness, and infrastructure management, that are affected by weather and climate hazards.

They also provided recommendations on the types of climate information needed, the most useful lead times, and how to strengthen trust and usability of climate services across sectors.

Outcomes from the workshops include:

  • A decision point framework outlining when and how climate information is most valuable to different sectors.
  • Recommendations to tailor seasonal forecasts, hazard outlooks, and multi-hazard early warnings to stakeholder needs.
  • Strengthened collaboration between farmers, institutions, and service providers.
  • Contributions to the enhancement of Belize’s multi-hazard early warning system through user-informed design.

Speaking on the importance of the workshops, representatives emphasized that the outputs will directly inform the National Meteorological Service’s work in improving climate services and ensuring they meet the needs of users at all levels.

The CREWS workshop series underscores Belize’s ongoing commitment to building resilience and safeguarding livelihoods against the increasing risks of climate variability and extreme weather events.
