By Zoila Palma:  Seven students from St. Ignatius High School (SIHS) are participating in a groundbreaking educational field trip to North Carolina in the United States from March 9 to March 19, 2026.

The students are participating in the STEM U Global exchange program led by the STEM U Foundation.

The delegation consists of seven top-performing students from the school’s Welding and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) program.

The group includes six female students and one male student who have distinguished themselves in the school’s STEM studies and technical training courses.

The initiative is designed to provide students with an industry-focused learning experience while strengthening technical education in Belize.

Two students, Bettina Myers and Marianie Canto, have been awarded full expense-paid scholarships for the trip after being recognized as the top two welding and NDT scholars at St. Ignatius High School.

Principal Jeaneane Neal said the program has already produced meaningful results for students.

Neal noted that since the partnership with the STEM U Foundation began, students have been earning certifications that make them employable immediately after graduation or allow them to pursue studies at leading universities offering STEM programs.

The trip package covers educational activities, travel, accommodation, and other logistics, allowing the students to focus fully on their learning experience.

Parents and community supporters have also contributed to the initiative, highlighting the role of community and corporate partnerships in expanding educational opportunities for Belizean students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
