By Zoila Palma: St. Ignatius High School, in collaboration with the STEM U Foundation, is providing a remarkable educational opportunity for two of its top students.

From February 17th to 26th, 2025, Silsa Perez and Flevian Strand, outstanding 4th form students in the welding and non-destructive testing (NDT) program, will travel to North Carolina for an intensive training program.

The STEM U Foundation, based in the USA, awarded this opportunity to Perez and Strand due to their exceptional performance, dedication, and academic achievements in their respective fields. Both students have demonstrated exceptional skill and commitment to their studies, earning them this prestigious opportunity.

“We are incredibly proud of Silsa and Flevian,” St. Ignatius High said.

“This is a direct reflection of their hard work and the quality of STEM education that we are committed to providing. It’s a significant achievement not only for our students but for the entire STEM community in Belize.”

Throughout the two-week program, Perez and Strand are gaining invaluable hands-on experience in welding and NDT, building on the knowledge they’ve acquired at St. Ignatius. The skills they develop during this training will complement their coursework and prepare them for future success in their fields.

Their journey began today as they departed Belize, eager to dive into the STEM opportunities awaiting them in the U.S.

Their visit includes stops at Gaston Community College and the Aviation Institute of Maintenance, where they will gain insights into cutting-edge technologies and the critical role welding and NDT play in industries like aviation.

At the Aviation Institute of Maintenance, the students were introduced to aviation maintenance operations, learning firsthand how essential skills like welding and NDT are to maintaining safety and functionality in the field. Similarly, their visit to Gaston Community College provided them with a closer look at the latest welding technology and machinery.

Both experiences were eye-opening for the students and faculty alike, deepening their understanding of the real-world applications of STEM studies.

“We’re grateful to the STEM U Foundation and Mr. Jarrus Mitchell for making this incredible journey possible,” said the St. Ignatius team.

“Our students are excited about the future and eager to continue exploring their education in welding and NDT here in the United States.”

This partnership is a significant step in expanding the opportunities available to students at St. Ignatius High School, further emphasizing the importance of hands-on learning in the fields of STEM education.
