By Zoila Palma: St. Ignatius High School has officially launched a groundbreaking Software Engineering Scholarship aimed at empowering young women through technology, marking a major step forward in advancing STEM education in Belize.
Under the leadership of Chairman Luis Oliva, Principal Vanessa Neal, and the STEM U initiative, St. Ignatius High School has formed a strategic partnership with Universidad Politécnica de Bacalar.
Through this collaboration, scholarships will be offered exclusively to young women, providing them with access to higher education in software engineering and opening doors to future-ready careers in technology.
The scholarship launch ceremony held on January 22, 2026, marked an important milestone, positioning Belize as a growing leader in technology and innovation within the Caribbean.
Addressing students at the event, Dr. Ingrid Citalli Suarez McLiberty delivered an inspiring message of empowerment and action, stating, “El futuro es tuyo. ¡Tómalo hoy!” — “The future is yours for the taking. Take it today.”
Over the next five years, scholarship recipients will not only receive financial support for their studies but will also gain critical technical skills designed to prepare them for the rapidly evolving digital economy.
The program aims to expand opportunities for young women, positively transform their lives, and enable them to play an active role in shaping the future through technology.
