St. Ignatius High School (SIHS) in Santa Elena is poised to offer unprecedented opportunities to its students thanks to a new partnership with the Universidad Autónoma Del Estado de Quintana Roo (UQROO) of Chetumal, Q.R., Mexico.

A pivotal meeting held on March 12 in San Ignacio & Santa Elena cemented the burgeoning collaboration between the institutions, setting the stage for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the coming month.

The meeting saw the participation of esteemed professors from UQROO, including Dr. Jaime Silverio Ortegón Aguilar, Dr. Jorge Ovidio Aguilar, and Dr. Javier Vázquez Castillo, representing the university’s commitment to fostering international educational ties.

For SIHS, Chairman Luis Oliva Sr. and Principal Jeaneane Neal were present, demonstrating their dedication to the partnership by exercising their right to vote early in the morning for Belize Election 2025 to ensure they could attend the crucial discussions. The agenda centered on exploring UQROO’s engineering career pathways and carefully reviewing the collaboration MoU document.

A key outcome of the meeting highlighted UQROO’s willingness to provide SolidWorks certification courses for SIHS students engaged in the STEM studies program. The university possesses the SolidWorks license and is keen to schedule these valuable certification opportunities, significantly enhancing the skill set and future prospects of SIHS students.

“The meeting was incredibly fruitful,” stated the chairman, Mr. Luis Oliva Sr. from SIHS. “We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to partner with UQROO in this venture. This collaboration marks a significant milestone for both the high school and the university, representing a first-of-its-kind partnership in Belize.”

The groundbreaking collaboration is designed to provide SIHS students with unparalleled access to advanced engineering resources and expertise, paving the way for future success in STEM fields. Both institutions expressed their deep gratitude to the board, faculty, and staff for their support and dedication to improving the education of future generations. This partnership promises to be a catalyst for innovation and academic excellence in Belizean education.
