St. Ignatius High School becomes first in Belize to pilot SolidWorks Training program

By Zoila Palma:  St. Ignatius High School marked a major milestone today as it officially launched the country’s first-ever SolidWorks Course Training program.

The school is the first in Belize to pilot this engineering and design initiative, developed through a partnership with the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Quintana Roo (UQROO).

The launch event took place at the SIHS Boardroom and brought together educators, STEM leaders, and representatives from Belize and Mexico to celebrate a historic step forward in technical education.

Chairman of the Board of Directors at St. Ignatius High School, Luis Oliva, welcomed the esteemed guests and expressed deep gratitude to UQROO for forging this groundbreaking partnership. He also encouraged students to seize the opportunity, emphasizing how transformative the SolidWorks program could be for their future.

Principal Jeneane Neal—who also serves as Chair of the Belize Association of Principals of Secondary Schools—emphasized the importance of the program in elevating STEM learning across the nation.

Neal said she hopes to expand the initiative to at least three additional high schools, noting that strengthening STEM capacity is essential for preparing Belizean students for global opportunities.

Key remarks were also delivered by Jamie Lee Usher, widely regarded as a trailblazer in STEM education in Belize, as well as Jharrus Mitchell of The STEM U Foundation, both of whom applauded the collaboration for opening new doors for youth innovation.

UQROO representatives outlined the academic partnership and presented details of the SolidWorks curriculum.

Dr. Jorge Ovidio Aguilar delivered an overview of the course, while Dr. Jaime Silverio Ortegón Aguilar spoke on the broader UQROO–St. Ignatius partnership aimed at developing long-term STEM exchanges.

The program also featured a special presentation by Elizer Tzib, followed by a vote of thanks from staff representative Mark Tesucum.
