Special Patrol Unit restructured as police establish specialized violence prevention teams

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Commissioner of Police Dr. Richard Rosado has confirmed that the Special Patrol Unit (SPU) has undergone restructuring as part of the department’s efforts to strengthen its response to gang violence.

Speaking during Sunday’s emergency police briefing, Rosado explained that the SPU had been reorganized to allow different units to concentrate on specific operational responsibilities.

The Commissioner said the Special Patrol Unit has returned to its original focus on border security.

Meanwhile, personnel have been assigned to a Violence Prevention and Enforcement Team operating primarily in Belize City.

Rosado identified Superintendent Dubon as the commander of the Special Patrol Unit and Superintendent Jones as the commander of the Violence Prevention and Enforcement Team.

He also revealed that a separate violence response team operating in rural Belize is headed by an officer identified as Gamboa.

When questioned about the possibility of returning former SPU personnel to previous leadership positions, Rosado said no such decision had been made.

The Commissioner explained that the restructuring forms part of a broader modernization strategy intended to improve police operations and strengthen specialized responses to criminal activity.
