By Zoila Palma: As October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children, Rosanna Briceño, is calling on Belizeans to unite in raising awareness and promoting early detection to save lives.
In a public message shared this week, Briceño emphasized that breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women in Belize and one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths.
“Breast cancer occurs when abnormal breast cells grow uncontrollably, forming tumors. If left untreated, these tumors can spread to other parts of the body, leading to life-threatening consequences,” Briceño explained, stressing the importance of education and vigilance.
Citing the World Health Organization, she noted that there were 2.3 million new diagnoses and 670,000 deaths globally in 2022, while Belize recorded 85 cases and 21 deaths, according to the Global Cancer Observatory Report.
“These figures are a powerful reminder of the importance of awareness, regular screening, and early detection,” she said.
Briceño concluded her message with a call to action, urging women to take charge of their health: “This October, let’s help to foster understanding and encourage women everywhere to prioritize their health. Together, awareness and early action can save lives.”
