By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children Rossana Briceno is highlighting Belizean men contributing to the development of our country.

Today’s feature is on Dr. Ramon Yacab.

Dr.Yacab is not just a medical oncologist, he is a beacon of hope for countless Belizeans battling cancer. His dedication to patient care, advocacy, and the development of oncology in Belize paints a remarkable portrait of a pioneer in his field.

His journey began at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC), where he forged the foundation of his medical expertise.

Driven by a desire to delve deeper into the complexities of cancer, he continued his post graduate training specialising in medical oncology at the renowned Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Armed with knowledge and honed skills, he returned to Belize in 2018, ready to tackle the challenges of his home nation’s oncology landscape.

At the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority (KHMHA) he serves as the head of the Oncology department, the first public oncology clinic in the Belizean healthcare system.

This was made possible through the engagement of local and international partners.

The oncology clinic at the KHMHA has served countless Belizeans since it opened its doors in 2021.  Dr.Yacab recognized the crucial role of holistic care beyond the purely clinical and became a passionate advocate for hospice and palliative care. His efforts led him to serve as vice president of the Belize Hospice Palliative Care Foundation, ensuring that even those facing the toughest battles find comfort and dignity in their final moments.

Dr. Yacab’s impact extends far beyond the walls of the hospital.

He actively collaborated with various stakeholders, including government offices and patient advocacy groups, to develop and implement a comprehensive national cancer treatment plan and involved in cancer related health policies. His tireless work helped establish Belize’s first public oncology clinic, making life-saving treatment accessible to a wider population.

But Yacab’s influence transcends official initiatives. He regularly participates in public education campaigns, dispelling myths and raising awareness about cancer prevention and early detection. His patients hail him not just for his medical expertise, but also for his empathy, compassion, and unwavering dedication to their well-being.

“Dr. Ramon Yacab is a pioneer in every sense of the word. He has not only shaped the landscape of oncology in Belize, but also instilled a sense of hope and empowerment in those facing the toughest challenges. He is a living testament to the power of unwavering dedication, patient-centered care, and a fierce belief in the human spirit,” the Special Envoy expressed.
