By Zoila Palma: Today, the Office of the Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children issued a statement expressing deep concern regarding a video circulating on social media depicting inappropriate adult conduct involving a child during a public parade.
“Public celebrations and cultural events should be spaces where everyone, especially children, can participate safely and with dignity. Regardless of the setting, adults have a responsibility to recognize and respect appropriate boundaries when interacting with children. Children should never be placed in situations involving sexualized or otherwise inappropriate adult behavior,” the Special Envoy said.
In addition, the Special Envoy said that the office is “equally concerned when such content is recorded, shared, or presented as entertainment. What adults normalize, children observe and learn. We all have a responsibility to model appropriate behavior and protect children from exposure to inappropriate conduct and content.”
Thus, the Office of the Special Envoy encourages parents and guardians to teach children about personal boundaries and appropriate behavior, while modeling these values themselves.
“Schools and youth organizations to strengthen age-appropriate education on boundaries, respect, healthy relationships, and child protection.
Event organizers to establish and reinforce clear child-safeguarding standards and have mechanisms for responding to inappropriate conduct.
Social-media users to think carefully before recording, posting, or sharing content involving children, particularly content that could compromise their dignity or well-being,” the Special Envoy said.
“Children should not bear responsibility for adult behavior. Our response must focus on protecting children, holding adults accountable for their conduct, and creating opportunities for education and prevention,” the office added.
The Office of the Special Envoy says that it is committed to promoting safe, respectful, and protective environments for everyone, with the protection and well-being of children at the center of this commitment.
