By Aaron Humes: Speaking passionately last week, Rossana Briceño, the Special Envoy for Families and Children, drew attention to the urgent need for reform in light of a shocking triple murder-arson case in San Felipe, Orange Walk District. Among other things, Briceño called on victims of domestic violence to directly contact the Police Minister Kareem Musa and the Commissioner of Police Dr Richard Rosado for immediate assistance.

Briceño’s comments, while aimed at highlighting systematic failures within the judicial and support systems, particularly singled out the police leadership for their perceived inaction. Asked to comment on Monday, Prime Minister John Briceño made clear he didn’t want that fight at home: “Why are you doing that to me? You want me to pick a fight with my wife?”

On a more serious note, he noted, “Rosanna is an independent-minded person, passionate about her work. She believes that if there’s something wrong, it should be called out.” He emphasized that her concerns are rooted in the experiences of women who often feel let down by the system, stating, “There’s enough blame to go around for everyone.”

While Briceño refrained from placing full blame on the Police Minister, he acknowledged that the Ministry of Human Development has a vital role in addressing these critical issues. He mentioned ongoing training efforts for police officers to better understand the challenges faced by women in abusive situations.

The Prime Minister concluded that it is essential for the public to recognize the government’s commitment to accept responsibility and explore solutions to enhance the safety and support of vulnerable individuals during times of crisis. “We need to protect these women, especially when they are being abused by their partners,” he affirmed, reiterating the government’s dedication to improving systemic responses to domestic violence.

The community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the tragic events in San Felipe, as Briceño’s statement and the Prime Minister’s support bring renewed attention to the necessity for systemic reforms and increased awareness of domestic violence issues.
