By Aaron Humes: With a meeting of the House of Representatives scheduled for Friday, September 13, whose luck will run out that day – members of the House of Representatives Patrick Faber and Tracy Taegar-Panton, or their erstwhile leader and Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow?
As part of the ongoing political feud within the United Democratic Party (UDP), Barrow has written to Speaker of the House of Representatives Valerie Woods, asking her to declare that the seats of Faber and Panton are vacated under Section 59(2)(e), otherwise known as the ‘crossing the floor/resignation’ provision.
Put simply, Barrow argues that the two resigned from the UDP, under whose banner they were elected to office, and are not considered members of the UDP per the Party Constitution.
This is the first time the provision is being tested as under the ‘constructive resignation’ clause of the UDP Constitution, former Orange Walk East area representative Marcel Cardona was deemed to have resigned (ironically, by Faber as Party Chairman), but never actually did so and was ostracized by the Party until his departure from the House of Representatives in 2012.
Both Faber and Panton have repeatedly insisted that they have not resigned from the Party, even as they seek to hold a ‘Unity Convention’ in October essentially setting up a parallel to the UDP.
It makes for a possible public showdown at the new temporary home of the National Assembly at the George Price Center – on a Friday the 13th, no less.
