By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Olympic football tournament, which started with a controversial end to the Morocco-Argentina opening match, finished in a pulsating 5-3 extra-time win for Spain over hosts France on Friday at the Parc des Princes in Paris.
France started off well, taking the lead in the 11th minute with a goal by Enzo Millot. However, Spain responded with two goals by Fermin Lopez in the 18th and the 25th minutes. Shortly afterwards, Alex Baena made it 3-1 in the 28th minute.
But France was not to be outdone and gradually rallied back with goals by Maghnes Akliouche in the 79th minute and Jean-Philippe Mateta in the 90’ +3.
Spain was determined to earn the gold medal and secured it with goals by Sergio Camello in the 110’ and 120’ +1 minutes.
The last time Spain won Olympic gold was in Barcelona in 1992.
Meanwhile, Morocco won bronze by routing Egypt 6-0 on Thursday.
Germany won bronze in the Women’s tournament with a 1-0 win over Spain on Friday. Brazil and the United States will play the final on Saturday.
