By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Southside Belize City mother who was arrested while chasing her son’s bicycle thief has been freed after a Magistrate dismissed all four charges against her.
Genoveva Noble, 42, of Euphrates Avenue, was charged with causing a bicycle to proceed in a one-way street, obscene language, resisting arrest, and boisterous behavior. However, after hearing her version of events, the Magistrate ruled in her favor and dismissed the case.
The incident unfolded on Saturday, February 1, when Noble spotted a man stealing her son’s bicycle and began chasing him, riding against traffic on East Canal Street. Police stopped her for the bicycle offense, but instead of helping her recover the stolen bike, she claimed they ignored her pleas and arrested her instead.
Frustrated, Noble admitted to using profanity but said she was angered by the officers’ refusal to assist her. She was subsequently detained at the police station, where she alleged that male officers attempted to handcuff her, tearing her dress and exposing her in front of her daughter.
After spending the weekend in custody without a phone call, Noble was brought before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday. The Magistrate dismissed all charges, noting that Noble was justified in her anger over the bicycle theft and had already suffered enough by being detained all weekend.
Following her release, Noble declined to give a full comment, stating she was too upset to speak without using profanity. However, she confirmed that the thief who stole her son’s bicycle was eventually caught that same day.
It remains unclear whether Noble has pursued any charges against the alleged thief.
