By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The south is squarely in the crosshairs of another round of heavy weather, with the National Meteorological Service issuing an excessive rainfall watch as a tropical wave sits over the country.
The watch warns that excessive rainfall of up to 2 to 4 inches or more is possible over the southern districts during the next 24 hours. With the ground still recovering from last weekend’s soaking, which flooded a stretch of the George Price Highway and parts of the Western Regional Hospital compound, residents in the south are advised to monitor conditions closely and follow flood updates from the National Hydrological Service and NEMO.
The day itself brings cloudy skies with sunny breaks, clouding over at times tonight. Outbreaks of showers and a few thunderstorms will develop mostly over the south today, easing slightly after dark, but the reprieve is brief, shower activity ramps up again tomorrow morning, mainly over the south and along coastal areas.
The reassurance worth repeating: this is rainfall, not a storm. No tropical cyclone formation is expected anywhere in the region over the next 48 hours.
Elsewhere, it stays warm, with inland highs of 93 degrees Fahrenheit (33 Celsius) falling to 73 (23 Celsius), coastal highs of 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31 Celsius) with lows of 81 (27 Celsius), and the hills reaching 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 Celsius) before cooling to 68 (20 Celsius).
Boaters catch a small break, with easterly winds of 10 to 15 knots, choppy seas, and waves of 3 to 5 feet, though care near heavy showers remains wise.
Wednesday keeps the pattern going, cloudy at times with showers and thunderstorms mainly along the coast and over the south during the day, then gradually decreasing.
As for the tides, today’s highs fall at 9:19 AM and 10:58 PM, with lows at 4:52 PM and 3:47 AM tomorrow. The sun rose at 5:26 AM and sets this evening at 6:30 PM. This forecast was prepared by forecaster Catherine Cumberbatch.
